CGSA Announces Karen Rumohr, AAGS as the 2018 CGSA/Toro Assistant Superintendent of the Year Award Recipient

February 1st, 2019

MISSISSAUGA, ON - The Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA) and The Toro Company are pleased to announce Ms. Karen Rumohr, AAGS, Assistant Superintendent from the Edmonton Petroleum Golf & Country Club in Edmonton, Alberta, as the CGSA/Toro Assistant Superintendent of the Year Award winner for 2018.

The CGSA/Toro Assistant Superintendent of the Year award recognizes the specific achievements of a golf course assistant superintendent whose performance and contributions to the success of the facility go beyond those that would normally be expected. The award is presented to an individual who has contributed to his or her golf facility in a significant way and who has demonstrated professionalism, leadership, innovation and a team approach in their work.

Karen has been a CGSA member since 2006 and is going into her 9th season with the Edmonton Petroleum Golf & Country Club. She was Assistant Superintendent at Pioneer Meadows Golf Course for 8 years prior.  Keith Blayney, AGS nominated Karen for this award and said, “Karen's passion for golf and her desire to be a leader in this industry has pushed her to excel in all aspects of our maintenance operation. Whether she is assisting the crew with their daily tasks or transforming some aspect of our operation for better efficiency, Karen can be counted on to get the job done. Being a woman in this male dominated industry pushed Karen to obtain her AAGS status shortly after it was initiated. Her article in GreenMaster "Breaking Down Barriers for 19 Years" was further testament to her passion for this industry and promotion of women in turf. Karen is a great ambassador for the industry, for turf and for women.”

“Karen is not only the first female to win this award, but she is also the first Accredited Assistant Golf Superintendent (AAGS) female member.  She received her AAGS designation back in 2015 and has shown her dedication to collect continuing education credits for her renewal in 2020 by attending CGSA conferences as well as writing an article for GreenMaster. It gave me great pleasure this week to be the one who called her to inform her that she is the winner of this prestigious award!”
- Kendall Costain, MS, CGSA President

As the CGSA/Toro Assistant Superintendent of the Year winner, Karen will receive an "All-Access" registration to The Canadian 2019 Golf Course Management Conference in Banff, Alberta from March 4-7, 2019, 4 nights' accommodation and transportation costs. Toro will provide a stipend for meals and incidental expenses during the conference. Karen is also invited to attend the Toro Experience for Assistant Superintendents, an exclusive event hosted at The Toro Company Headquarters in Bloomington MN in August of each year, including round-trip airfare and accommodations during the event.

“Toro is proud to honour outstanding Assistant Superintendents, like Karen, who represent the next generation of industry leaders. We look forward to hosting Karen and a group of her Assistant Superintendent peers for networking and education during the upcoming Toro Experience for Assistant Superintendents.”
