2015 Fall Field Day

Winners, Wildlife and A Wonderful Day: A 2015 CGSA Fall Field Day Recap

Kyle Sobczak, Assistant Superintendent at Lynx Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta, is the 2015 CGSA Fall Field Day Champion. Kyle fired a one-under-par round of 70 to capture the title on the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course’s par-71, 6,300-yard layout.

The low net champion at this year’s event is Mark Kuhns from Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey with a net score of 67.

A total of 144 golfers competed in the 2015 Fall Field Day in bright sunshine and 15+ mountain air in Jasper, Alberta.  After a 90 minute frost delay, Superintendent RJ Cloutier, his assistant Glenn Griffis and the entire turf management team at JPL had the course in awesome condition for the one day tournament. RJ’s team was ably assisted in preparing the participants for the day by Director of Golf Gregg Lown, Brenda Dew and Tahlon Sweenie. Their combined efforts, along with those of Event Manager Ashley Clerk, assured all of CGSA’s guests of an awesome experience.

CGSA President Kyle Kellgren thanked the entire Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge team, but had special mention for Cloutier.

“RJ had his golf course at its peak for our two days of golf, despite significant rainfall on Sunday,” said Kellgren. “He even had cooperation from the area wildlife to enhance the show for the visiting golf industry crowd!”

In total, gross and net prizes were handed out to 14 individuals in four flights with another six prizes going to long drive and closest to the pin winners during the awards ceremony. Industry prizes, including a POGO from Plant Health Division and Stevens Water Monitoring and a Kubota Shop Vac, were also distributed.

Several CGSA award recipients were acknowledged publicly for the first time at the Fall Field Day Reception, including Keith Blayney, 2015 CGSA Bayer Superintendent of the Year, Morgan Robins, CGSA Toro Future Superintendent of the Year and, Rob Officer, the 2015 John B Steel award recipient.

Winners of the 18-hole, Par 3 event on Monday, September 21 included low gross winner Kelly Watkins, Keso Turf Supplies and low net winner Darren Kalyniuk, Superintendent at the Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In addition, there were proximity contest prizes on each of the 18 holes adding fun and excitement to the entire round.
